Susan Herbst, UCONN President

So what does she do when she’s not helping to put together major expansion plans for the university? As you might have guessed she likes UConn sports, especially basketball and football, although
she is a fan of the school’s baseball and men’s soccer teams, noting that the soccer team just missed making it to the Final Four. She’s also excited about the recent realignment of the Big East Conference that should result in more exposure for UConn in several new markets such as Texas and Florida.

Herbst also enjoys eating out in downtown Hartford and West Hartford with her husband, Doug Hughes, an advertising consultant, and their teenage children Rebecca and Daniel. She’s also discovered
Connecticut shoreline towns such as Branford, and likes to go skiing with her family in New Hampshire and Vermont. She’s cautious on the slopes. “UConn needs me in one piece,” she said.

Herbst relaxes to Bruce Springsteen and the Black Eyed Peas while checking her Facebook and Twitter accounts, and by thumbing through her favorite magazines, “The New Yorker” and “Vanity
Fair.” She just finished reading “The Marriage Plot” by Jeffrey Eugenides. Herbst has written several books herself. Her most recent is “Rude Democracy, Civility and Incivility in American Politics,” published in 2010 by Temple University Press.

When she’s not writing books, brokering development deals or checking Facebook, Herbst would like to travel, preferably in Italy. She also has put attending a NASCAR race high on her to-do list. You see her younger brother Steven is a vice president at NASCAR. She should be able to get good seats.
